Merganser report, page 9 of 9... Common Mergansers

Over the years I wasn’t exactly blessed with Common Merganser sightings and therefore had little
to show. That of course had to do with location as well as opportunity and weather. The few ducks at
the bottom had arrived from their winter quarters one early spring, only to find CT’s Lake Congamond
frozen in its center. That forced them somewhat closer to the shore. Even so, because of overcast
conditions, I wasn't able to get any good tight shots. The law of physics in photography...
A more recent image of the 2 pairs on top came about during Feb. 2011 along NY’s Hudson River.
While the flock in the center image was photographed during Jan. 2012 at CT’s Housatonic River.
Notice the 3 juveniles on the right, a first for me. Super sprightly...
Mergansers belong to the duck family, so their labeling seems to be a misnomer. The Swiss natural historian Conrad Gesner, who supposedly named them back during the 16th century, may have
thought of them as geese; “Meergans” or Sea Goose. Perhaps they could be seen as such...
